If someone told you there is one primary thing you can do to increase dramatically your chances of getting a job offer when you graduate, would you do it?  Well, there is one thing – secure a strategic internship!

TOP 10 Reasons to Get an Internship

1)      Test a career choice.

2)      Get a job offer:  According to a 2010 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Educators (NACE), “42.3 percent of the seniors who had internship experience and applied for a job received at least one job offer. Conversely, only 30.7 percent of seniors without internship experience who applied for a job received an offer.”*

3)      Enhance your earning potential with internship experience:  Data from the same 2010 survey by NACE indicates that the average senior with an internship earned nearly 31 percent more than surveyed seniors without an internship.*

4)      Many prospective employers require internship experience.

5)      Overcome the “Experience Required” criterion for positions.

6)      Build your resume with projects and experience.

7)      Receive academic credit (many majors provide one to three hours of elective credit for pre-approved internships).

8)      Bolster graduate and professional school (law and business) applications.

9)      Develop your network.

10)  Earn money:  Many internships pay or provide valuable perks, such as free education, networking events, seminars, travel, and other non-wage benefits.

We recommend all students complete at least one internship (paid or unpaid, for-credit or not-for-credit) before graduation.  Internship opportunities are posted on Loyola’s EMPLOYOLA, CareerInsider, and GoingGlobal, all found on the Career Development Center’s website, as well organizations’ websites and several internship websites.  If you need help finding an internship, contact us at or (504) 865-3860 for an appointment with your career coach.
