Our friends over at OPEN (that is, the Orleans Public Education Network) are doing a lot of great work. (They’re the ones we collaborated with on this white paper arguing for a community role in determining the future of NOLA education governance.) They’re about to start a five week program called the Understanding Governance Summer Series. Each week, a different research group is presenting their take on the future of governance. The first one is this coming Tuesday, July 20, from 6-8pm at the Urban League offices at 2322 Canal Street. The good folks over at the Cowen Institute and the Bureau of Governmental Research (BGR) will be discussing how the models outlined in their report on governance address accountability for improving student achievement, equity in access, and school funding.
I’ll make sure I post updates about the coming presentations as they approach. Each one looks highly informative and, given OPEN’s emphasis on democratic, community incorporation in these processes, any and everyone should come out if they can. Spread the word!
