Background: The Louisiana Civil Justice Center (LCJC) was established in 2006 to provide disaster legal assistance and connect displaced residents with critical legal services. Over the years, LCJC’s mission has expanded to provide legal services to low-income, disaster-affected and other vulnerable populations across Louisiana. Through a toll-free statewide hotline, court-based help desks and legal clinics staffed by Intake Specialists and Staff Attorneys, LCJC is the first line of communication for thousands of residents facing critical legal issues. Through these services, LCJC effectively assists more than 10,000 individuals a year resolve legal problems that affect their basic quality of life such as the maintenance of housing and income, the stability of a family, or the health and well-being of their children.

Position: LCJC seeks one part-time Staff Attorney to work in our New Orleans office and court-based Help Desks in Orleans and Jefferson Parish. The Staff Attorney will focus primarily on evaluating and assisting individuals who are seeking legal assistance on a variety of civil legal issues through our telephone hotline and at our court-based help desks. In addition, the Staff Attorney will provide limited assistance to community members through occasional community clinics and programs. This is a non-litigation position. In order to help the greatest number in need resolve their legal issues, LCJC provides limited legal advice and brief legal services only, and does not represent clients.

Responsibilities: Callers seeking legal assistance through the hotline and at each help desk are registered by Intake Specialists who determine eligibility for services, gather basic case facts, and obtain documents related to the legal problem. The Staff Attorney is responsible for supervising non-attorney intake staff and for providing more extensive evaluation of the caller or visitor’s situation, including reviewing and analyzing pertinent documents to determine what the best legal options are. The Staff Attorney will discuss these options, assist with the completion of forms and pleadings, draft pleadings, produce necessary correspondence and provide referrals. The Staff Attorney will also help coordinate community legal clinics, and is responsible for managing the scheduling of appointments and consultations with callers and community members as needed. Under the supervision of the Supervising Staff Attorney and Operations Manager, the Staff Attorney will offer a range of advice, counseling, or brief services to assist callers and community members in resolving their legal issues. Clients who would most benefit from representation in court will be referred to outside legal services.

Qualifications: Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Louisiana, have a notary license, and be interested in working with low-income, elderly and other vulnerable populations in a fast-paced environment. Applicants must have excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills and the ability to work well under pressure. Computer proficiency is required, including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and legal research tools, and a willingness to learn new programs including case management systems.

Compensation: The position is part-time (approximately 15-25 hours/week) and will be compensated on an hourly basis commensurate with legal aid services and attorney experience.
