We thought it would be a good idea to post an excerpt from Fr. Wildes’ campus update in which he details the status of several current projects:

“The contract has been signed for the renovation of Thomas Hall, and work will begin within the next few weeks. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

We plan to go out to bid, in May, for the additional floors for the West Road Garage. The additional 236 spaces are necessary before we begin work on a new residence hall in the second phase of the master plan. We expect the construction to last approximately 10 months. The garage will remain in operation, close to full capacity, while the construction is underway.

On a less glamorous note, four out of five Central Plant cooling towers were replaced last month, and work is ongoing on other improvements to the plant and related campus infrastructure. These upgrades will allow us to move forward with current and future projects as outlined in the master plan. The roof of the old library was replaced. Work is continuing on the repair of the exterior stonework at Holy Name of Jesus Church.

Plans are also being finalized, and preliminary site work is underway, for the renovation of the former Dominican Conference Center on the Broadway campus. This space will be used by the College of Law as the new home of the Stuart H. Smith Law Clinic and Center for Social Justice.

In April, we will begin seeking proposals from architects for the design of a new student center/residence hall to be built where the Danna Student Center now stands, as well as for the renovation and expansion of Monroe Hall.”

We are aware that there are some places on campus roadways and parking areas in need of attention. We have made arrangements to have repairs completed as soon as we are able to do so with a minimal impact on traffic. In the meantime, we urge everyone to be careful, and we thank you for your patience.

As of Monday morning, February 1st, the replacement of cooling towers at the main campus central plant is proceeding as planned. The West Road is now open to traffic, and partial air conditioning capabilities have been restored. There will still be occasional short-duration closings of West Road to move equipment into position.

As always, thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

As part of our ongoing infrastructure upgrades, it is necessary that the cooling towers on the Main Campus Central Plant be replaced. In order to accomplish this, West Road access and campus air conditioning will be affected as follows:

WEST ROAD:

The West Road will be closed from the West Road Garage to St. Charles Avenue from 6 AM Friday morning, January 29th through 10 PM Sunday, January 31st to vehicle traffic, parking, and pedestrians. The West Road Garage will remain accessible from the Freret Street side. This is due to the need for raising and lowering of equipment to and from the roof of the Central Plant. As of Monday, February 1st, West Road traffic is expected to return to normal, although there may be occasional interruptions throughout the following week.

AIR CONDITIONING:

There will be no air conditioning generated on the main campus from 5 PM Friday evening, January 29th until 5 AM Saturday morning, January 30th (with the exception of Mercy Hall). After 5 AM Saturday morning, limited air conditioning will begin to return to the main campus buildings, and service will continue to be restored throughout the following week as work progresses within the Central Plant.

The entire project is expected to be completed by Sunday, February 7th, WEATHER PERMITTING. If any of these activities are postponed by weather, we will keep you advised.

It is absolutely essential that this work be conducted at this time. Heating will NOT be affected. Your patience will be very much appreciated, and I thank you for your collective positive approach to these campus improvements, as well as the many which are yet to come.

Again, thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

This is an exciting time to be at Loyola. With a new Master Plan (pdf) in hand, ongoing construction will be a fact of campus life for quite some time. We will use this space to keep the community posted on the progress of these projects.
