Since we are in the South, some might expect me to title this blog post something like “Come on down now.” But the American South, and New Orleans especially, which is rife with cosmopolitan flair and an eccentricity that remains impossible to label, does not fit into easy stereotypes or even the most benign of expectations.
Take the oil spill. To observe how it is portrayed in the media, one might think New Orleans is ground zero. It is not. We’re 130 miles north of the site of the spill, and 80 miles north of the gulf coastline. New Orleans is helping the rest of the Gulf South get back up on its feet, and oil poses no threat at all to the city. Yes, we have a little less seafood than we did a few months ago, but this remains a vibrant city in the throes of a true American renaissance. The jazz still plays, the streetcar still rolls, the moss still clings to its 300 year old oak trees, the parades and parties still happen, the Saints still play, the beignets still fry and – best of all – each year thousands of university students still come to study here. Perhaps you will be one of them!
As people like James Carville and Drew Brees have said, where else would you want to live but in beautiful and historic uptown New Orleans?
Here are some excerpts from a recent email our director of admissions Keith Gramling sent out to our pool of interested students. It’s packed with some great information on how you can visit Loyola in beautiful and historic uptown New Orleans:
Visiting campus is one of the most important aspects of the college decision process. We want to make sure you have all the information you need and to be able to see how amazing Loyola is. Whether it’s touring campus, sitting in on a class, or meeting with a professor, we want you to interact with the Wolfpack!
The Office of Admissions offers tours Monday through Friday at 11:30am and 3:30pm. We can set up a meeting with an admissions counselor for you before or after the tour, whatever best fits your schedule. With two weeks notice, we can set up class visits and meetings with our outstanding faculty. Whether choosing a major ranging from biology to visual arts, our award winning professors would love to take the time to meet you.
So set up your Loyola experience today or call our office at 800.4.LOYOLA or 504.865.3240.
There are several special opportunities throughout the year for you to come and visit campus and qualify for the $1,000 tuition credit:
On Saturday, November 13th, we will be hosting our Jazz Brunch. Come learn about Loyola as you tour campus, meet and hear from students and faculty, and enjoy delicious New Orleans cuisine and jazz. Space is limited, so call our office to reserve your seats.
Saturday visits are also available on December 4th, January 15th, and February 19th. These are also our College of Music and Fine Arts Audition Days. In addition to offering opportunities for on campus auditions we will also host tours of campus and admission interviews.
Because we believe the best way to experience what makes our community unique is by visiting, Loyola is offering a $1,000 tuition credit for enrolling students who visit campus before May 1, 2011. Can’t wait to your scheduled visit to see our campus? We have posted a video on our website that will provide you with a tour of our campus and a taste of the city of New Orleans.
We look forward to your visiting and seeing for yourself how special Loyola is and why New Orleans was recently voted by AAA Southern Traveler magazine as Best Large City for a Weekend Getaway in its Best of the South 2010 survey.
